Ruling Backs Doctors on Reporting Sex Crimes

A federal judge ruled in Wichita that doctors and other healthcare workers in the state could not be forced to report instances of underage sex to authorities.
U.S. District Judge J. Thomas Marten issued a preliminary injunction blocking Kansas Atty. Gen. Phill Kline’s interpretation of a state law.
Sex involving someone under age 16 is illegal in Kansas. Last July, Kline said the 1982 law required doctors, nurses, social workers and others to report such illegal underage sex.
