Campaign Promises -- and Repayments
Re “Unruffled Governor Vows to Repay Loan,” Jan. 28: Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says he meant to pay back the loan and praised the judge. He called the ruling “fantastic.” Hard to believe that the governor considers a ruling that he violated state election law fantastic, especially since he entered a motion to have the case dismissed. I guess it beats being wrong in public.
When his “solution” to the deficit, a multibillion-dollar debt to our children, tanks in March, we can only hope he once again jumps up, saying, “Just like I planned it.” Didn’t he also plan an audit to solve the debt? Didn’t he also plan an investigation into his questionable behavior? So long as he continues to smile and say that things are going his way, who is to know? Only the first responders who lose retirement benefits, the children left behind by cut programs, the infrastructure he once defended. That was his solution

“Governor Still Has Promises to Keep” (Jan. 27) failed to mention a very important decision the governor can make that could help our environment and cost the state nothing. The governor appoints four commissioners to the Coastal Commission. Without spending a penny, he can choose commissioners who will work to protect a beautiful and accessible coast. A “hydrogen highway” may have to wait, but he can protect our coast today.
