Police Officers Overpaid Due to Payroll Error

A payroll error resulted in the city overpaying its police officers by more than $327,000 over the last three years, officials said.
The error occurred in January 2001 when a payroll employee made a 1.5% addition to the Salinas Police Officers Assn.’s base salary scale. The mistake resulted in overpayments to 134 officers ranging from $25 to $4,750 over the three-year period.
After discussions with city staff, the Salinas Police Officers Assn. agreed last week that the overpaid officers will repay the money through a series of pay cuts. The deductions, effective March 5, should be completed by March 2007.
Effective Jan. 1, the city also corrected the base salaries for officers to reflect a 1.5%, rather than 3%, increase.
