Charges Urged in Fatal Crash in Ventura County

The California Highway Patrol has recommended that vehicular manslaughter charges be filed against an Oxnard man accused of stealing a car and getting into a wreck that killed his passenger.
Jaime Amezcua, 23, was driving a Honda at about 3:30 p.m. Aug. 11 on Potrero Road east of Hueneme Road when the car went out of control, struck a raised dirt embankment and overturned, said CHP spokesman Steve Reid.
Both Amezcua and his passenger, 22-year-old Francisco Heredia of Oxnard, were ejected, Reid said. Heredia was killed, and Amezcua suffered a head injury.
Although Amezcua told officials that Heredia was driving, Reid said that investigators believed Amezcua was actually the driver.
The car belonged to an acquaintance of Amezcua’s and had been reported stolen.
Bill Redmond of the district attorney’s office said Tuesday that he had received the CHP report but had not decided yet whether to file charges.
