Sooners Pull Off Sweep

Sherri Coale and Oklahoma have won a lot of games and earned plenty of respect in the Big 12 Conference over the last few seasons.

There was an NCAA championship-game appearance in 2002, three consecutive Big 12 regular-season titles and a league tournament championship.

Coale’s goals are a bit more modest this season: a season sweep of longtime national power Texas Tech will do just fine.

“That earns you some stripes,” the Sooners’ coach said after No. 23-ranked Oklahoma beat the No. 8 Lady Raiders, 64-53, Wednesday at Norman, Okla.

The Sooners (18-7, 8-6 Big 12), who have won five of their last six, swept the season series with the Lady Raiders. Oklahoma beat Texas Tech, 68-62, at Lubbock on Feb. 10.

It was the Sooners’ third sweep of the Lady Raiders in the last four seasons.

Point guard Dionnah Jackson matched a career high with 23 points to lead Oklahoma.

Texas Tech (23-5, 9-5), coming off a 73-68 upset of then-No. 1 Texas on Sunday, shot 31% from the field.

Freshman guard Alesha Robertson led the Lady Raiders with 12 points.

No. 1 Connecticut 79, Providence 38 -- The victory at Storrs, Conn., gave the Huskies (23-2, 13-1 Big East) their 11th consecutive conference regular-season title.

Ann Strother had 10 points, Jessica Moore had 10 rebounds and Diana Taurasi had a season-high 10 assists for the Huskies.

The Friars (4-21, 0-14) were held scoreless for nearly 13 minutes in their 14th loss in a row.

No. 5 Texas 73, No. 16 Baylor 72 -- Jamie Carey made two three-point baskets in the second overtime to secure the Longhorns’ 33rd consecutive home victory, longest in the nation.

Heather Schreiber scored 20 points for Texas (24-3, 12-2 Big 12) and Stacy Stephens had 15 points and 22 rebounds.

Sophia Young had 18 points and 15 rebounds for Baylor (20-7, 8-6).

No. 9 Kansas State 68, Iowa State 33 -- Kendra Wecker had 20 points and 11 rebounds to help the Wildcats (22-3, 13-1 Big 12) to their ninth consecutive victory.

It was the 31st consecutive regular-season victory at home for the Wildcats.

Katie Robinette led Iowa State (13-12, 6-8) with 20 points.

Notre Dame 93, No. 21 Miami 58 -- Jacqueline Batteast had 23 points and 10 rebounds at South Bend, Ind.

Notre Dame (18-8, 11-3 Big East) stretched its home winning streak to 17 games.

Miami (20-5, 9-5) had a season-high 37 turnovers.
