Mahony Releases List of Alleged Abusers
It is encouraging that the Archdiocese of Los Angeles has named the priests and other religious [figures] alleged to have been implicated in child abuse since 1931 (Feb. 18). It would be equally appropriate to name -- and talk about -- the bishops and archbishops who served during that same period. They are as responsible, if not more responsible, for exposing thousands of children to priests and other abusers by rotating perpetrators from parish to parish. As a lifelong Catholic, I am saddened that I now find the Catholic hierarchy entirely without credibility and culpable for gross neglect in the care and protection our children.

Don’t all of the priests listed in the abuse report released by Cardinal Roger Mahony live in the U.S.? What happened to the notion that a person is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law? I guess this most important law of the land does not apply to Catholic priests.

Mahony ought to be ashamed. He’s not some new arrival called in to deal with the mess: He’s been in charge of the archdiocese for nearly two decades. Oops, I keep forgetting. Humility never was one of his strong points.
