Roenick Breaks His Jaw
Sean Burke made 26 saves in his first game back with Philadelphia, which lost star center Jeremy Roenick to a broken jaw in a 2-1 victory Thursday night over the New York Rangers at New York.
The Flyers actually lost two centers in the third period. Roenick was struck in the face by a puck, and X-rays later showed a broken and cut jaw. Keith Primeau was injured in a collision with the Rangers’ Bobby Holik.
Roenick was hit by Ranger defenseman Boris Mironov’s shot and collapsed in a pool of blood to the left of Burke with 15:51 remaining in regulation. Roenick was motionless for several minutes before getting up and slowly leaving the ice while holding a towel to his face. He was later helped onto a stretcher.
The Flyers acquired Burke from Phoenix on Monday. Burke had a short stint with the Flyers late in the 1997-98 season.
