Treatment Urged for People Close to Ill Boy
A 12-year-old boy from Novato’s Hill Middle School is recovering from bacterial meningitis, and health officials are urging 35 people who had close contact with him to undergo antibiotic treatments.
The boy is being treated for the rare, potentially fatal infection at UC San Francisco Medical Center, said Laurel Yrun, a nurse in the Novato Unified School District.
The boy was responding to antibiotics and doing well, Yrun said.
On Sunday, the boy’s mother noted his worsening flu and headache symptoms and took him to Marin General Hospital, officials said.
Marin County and Novato school officials mailed a letter Tuesday, notifying parents of the 550 sixth- through eighth-graders at the school about the case.
