Sony, Toshiba to Create Next-Generation Chips

Japanese electronics makers Sony Corp. and Toshiba Corp. will work together to develop technologies for next-generation semiconductor chips by the end of 2005, both sides said.
The two companies will share the $190-million cost for the project, using about 150 engineers to develop 45-nanometer processing and design technologies for large-scale integrated circuits.
At a time when Japanese electronics makers are trying to fight off competition from U.S. and Asian rivals, the development of advanced semiconductor chips is considered crucial.
