Democratic Party Reconsiders Abortion
How nice to read that the Democratic Party, with the evident support of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, may join the Republicans in opposing safe and legal abortions for American women. (“Democratic Leadership Rethinking Abortion,” Dec. 23.) Of course, this was inevitable in a party whose strategy amounts to pursuing the GOP in a race to the right and that relies on opinion polls to figure out what it stands for.
Along these lines, I suggest the Democrats adopt a new name for their party: “Republican Lite.” Their slogan? “All the callousness and viciousness but none of the conviction.”

I was deeply disturbed to read Indiana Rep. Tim Roemer’s argument that the Democratic Party cannot rebound from its losses in the November election unless it shows more tolerance to those who oppose abortion rights.
What could be more “tolerant” than acknowledging individuals have the legal right to choose for themselves?

What is Pelosi thinking? She is encouraging Roemer to run for the next Democratic National Committee chair. He is against abortion rights. Democrats cannot abandon their support of women by denying them this fundamental right to determine the fate of their own bodies.
I am stunned that she would support an antiabortion candidate to lead our party. If we end up with an antiabortion chair, I will leave this party and take everyone I know with me.
