From Times Staff Reports
Councilman Greig Smith unveiled a plan Tuesday that he said would let the city hire 440 police officers at a cost of $25 million.
Last month, Smith proposed that the city borrow $25 million against $66 million it expects to receive from the state through Proposition 1A, which limits the state’s shifting of tax revenues from cities and counties to the state general fund.
He said $5 million of that could be used to qualify for a $20-million federal grant to hire officers.
