Hand Recount Ordered in Governor’s Race
Secretary of State Sam Reed ordered an unprecedented statewide hand recount in the state’s closest gubernatorial race on record.
The race between Republican Dino Rossi and Democrat Christine Gregoire ended in a virtual dead heat in the first two counts.
After Rossi was certified the winner by 42 votes out of 2.9 million ballots cast, the Democratic Party requested a manual recount and agreed to pay the cost of more than $700,000.
Reed’s order, signed in Olympia, directs the state’s 39 counties to begin the recount this week.
