Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Vice Chairman Tom Coughlin, whose responsibilities include overseeing Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club warehouse stores, will retire in January, the company announced.
Coughlin, 55, has been with Wal-Mart for more than 25 years. His term on the Wal-Mart board runs through June. He has been vice chairman and a board member since April 2003.
Wal-Mart has seen disappointing sales since the day after Thanksgiving, but company spokesman Jay Allen said the results had no bearing on Coughlin’s departure.
Shares of Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart fell 41 cents to $52.52 on the NYSE.
