Officer Kills Armed Man During Chase

A police officer fatally shot a suspected gang member early Saturday following a foot chase from a bar in the Pico-Union district near downtown, authorities said.
Police said that two officers chased the man about midnight to a market at Olympic Boulevard and Union Avenue, where he tripped and reached for a handgun in his waistband.
One of the officers fired several rounds, striking the man once, said Sgt. Michael Mattox of the Los Angeles Police Department. Police and coroner’s officials did not identify the man Saturday.
