Not Guilty Plea in Tax-Evasion Case

A former Newport Beach couple accused of failing to report $190 million in earnings over four years pleaded not guilty Tuesday to felony tax-evasion charges.
Prosecutors are seeking $11 million in unpaid taxes from energy executive Richard Engel, 60, and his former wife, Jolene, 53, in what is believed to be the largest tax-evasion case brought in California through the state Franchise Tax Board.
A trial date will be set Jan. 7 in Superior Court in Santa Ana.
