Independent Probe of Police Incident Unlikely
The Police Commission will likely scrap an independent investigation of a 2002 street brawl involving off-duty officers.
Seven officers face suspension or possible firing for their actions in the alleged mishandling of the investigation.
Three off-duty officers, including the son of former Police Chief Alex Fagan, are accused of beating two men after demanding their bag of steak fajitas.
The Police Commission had ordered that an outside agency be brought in to investigate. After months of delays, the commission asked Kroll Associates to conduct the review for $85,000. Last month, the Office of Citizen Complaints lodged charges directly with the commission.
Kroll’s mandate, which was to advise the chief on the charges, is unclear now because the Office of Citizen Complaints went straight to the Police Commission, which is scheduled to discuss the charges Wednesday.
