Felix Munoz, a junior at Santa Ana High, remained in critical condition Friday at Western Medical Center in Anaheim.
Munoz, 16, a quarterback and defensive back for the Saints, collapsed on the sideline Thursday night during his team’s 34-7 loss to Westminster.
He underwent surgery to relieve pressure on his brain, Athletic Director Frank Alvarado.
“He is responding to simple commands and he has shown some improvement,” Alvarado said.
Munoz, making his second start at quarterback, had been sacked earlier in the game, but apparently gave no indication that anything was wrong before collapsing late in the first quarter, Alvarado said.

Marc Ware, the cross-country coach at Cypress since 1999, has been fired.
Ware, 49, said Cypress administrators told him he was fired for violating CIF rules, a charge he denies.
“I don’t believe I violated any rules,” he said.
Ware, a walk-on coach, refused to give details about the rules he was accused of breaking, but said they were “minor.”
Cypress administrators did not return several phone messages left for them Friday.
