Tesoro Takes Golf Title

Mission Viejo Tesoro, in only its second year of existence, was a surprise winner Monday in the Southern Section South Coast Divisional boys’ golf championship at El Prado Golf Course in Chino.

Doug Bischoff and Jeff Grant each shot one-under-par 71 for Tesoro, which used four freshmen and a sophomore to shoot two-over-par 362 and win by three shots over Mission Viejo. Irvine Woodbridge, ranked No. 3 by The Times, shot 366 and did not advance to the Southern Section championships.

Ian Hjulberg shot 69 and Josh Wooding shot 70 for No. 1-ranked Riverside Poly, which shot 376 at Apple Valley Country Club and won the Eastern Divisional by 15 shots over No. 5 Palm Desert.

Two-time defending Southern Section champion Santa Barbara San Marcos shot 372 at the Village Country Club in Lompoc to win the Central Coast by 11 shots over Goleta Dos Pueblos.

Other divisional winners were: Cerritos Gahr in the Central, Redlands East Valley in the Desert, Loyola in the Northern and Arcadia in the Western. The top two teams in each qualify for the section finals Thursday at the PGA of Southern California Golf Club in Calimesa.

Los Angeles Loyola, San Clemente, Huntington Beach and Westlake Village Westlake earned the top four seeded positions, respectively, for the Southern Section Division I boys’ volleyball playoffs when the pairings were released Monday.

Valencia, injury-plagued Corona del Mar, Santa Barbara San Marcos and Santa Barbara, in that order, were the top four seeded teams in Division II.

First-round matches in all five divisions are Friday. Finals are May 21 at Cypress College.

Corona del Mar (19-0), the top team in the Southern Section Division I boys’ tennis rankings and in The Times’ rankings all season, is the No. 1-seeded team for the upcoming Division I playoffs.

The other three seeded teams in Division I are No. 2 North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake (20-2), which is on a 14-match winning streak, No. 3 Beverly Hills (11-4) and No. 4 Palos Verdes Estates Peninsula (17-3).

In Division II, Palm Desert (18-1) is the No. 1-seeded team despite that the Aztecs are No. 3 in the Southern Section rankings behind No. 1-ranked Arcadia (18-0), which is seeded No. 2, and No. 2-ranked San Marino (9-7), which is seeded No. 4. San Marino handed Palm Desert its only loss, an 11-7 decision on April 4 that ended the Aztecs’ winning streak at 35.
