Bet You Didn’t Know the Claremont Colleges Had Their Own Film School
Richard Chamberlain, who attended Pomona College in the mid-1950s, had this to say in his new autobiography: “Coed Pomona, Scripts College and Claremont Men’s College were all adjacent to the sleepy little town of Claremont.” Guess you can’t blame an actor for referring to Scripps as Scripts.

Easy for them to say: When FedEx sent a verification message to Diana Nemeth of Irvine, she couldn’t help but notice the unusual name of the person who signed for it (see accompanying).

Which made me think of the football broadcaster who misinterpreted a roster note and said that one player had attended “None College.”

Thanks for the warning: An anonymous reader wondered if more women -- or none -- would take a certain drug after reading about its side effects (see accompanying).

Obey your conscience: In Carmel, Richard Krause of Redlands came to a street that led to a church in one direction and a golf course in the other (see photo). Of course, I do a lot of praying on the golf course, as well.

How much mileage can it get? After scrutinizing one car ad, Jim Moore of Nipomo concluded: “The styling is too boxy for me” (see accompanying).

Finishing touches: I published a photo of a sign that said “Furniture Restorer ... Funeral Director” at a 133-year-old business.
That brought a note from Alan R. Hafer of Vista, who is in the latter business.
“In ye olde tymes it was not uncommon that the village undertaker was also the furniture/cabinetmaker since he was the one building the casket anyway,” Hafer pointed out.

Another stinging blow to tourism: The police log of the Laguna News-Post reported that “a resident called police about bees swarming from a tree next to the Laguna Beach Visitors Bureau. Signs were posted in the area to warn people.... “

Hi, I’ll be your news server: KCBS-TV anchor Laura Diaz, who was given a lifetime achievement award at an L.A. Press Club banquet the other night, anchored the news at KSBY-TV in San Luis Obispo early in her career. The pay was so low that she kept her day job as a waitress at a local restaurant.

miscelLAny: USC, home of the George Lucas Instructional Building, the Johnny Carson Television Center and the Steven Spielberg Music Scoring Stage, was the first college in America to establish a film school. So, if any college deserves to be called Scripts, it’s USC.
