Pacifica’s Weil Receives Coaching Honor
Rob Weil, who led Garden Grove Pacifica to the Southern Section Division III championship, has been named 2003 state coach of the year in softball by Cal-Hi Sports.
The Mariners finished 31-2 and atop the Cal-Hi state’s rankings. It was the fourth title for Weil, who won three in a row at Pacifica from 1997 to 1999.
Woodbridge’s Alan Dugard, whose Warriors (27-8) won the Division I softball title, has been named large-school coach of the year.
The medium-school baseball coach of the year is Scott Muckey, who led Encino Crespi (27-6) to the Division III championship. The state baseball coach of the year is Justin Machado of Carlsbad La Costa Canyon (32-1), Cal-Hi’s top-ranked team. Chatsworth (33-1) finished runner-up in Cal-Hi’s state rankings but was No. 1 in USA Today’s final national rankings.
The Inland Empire All-Star Football Classic takes place at 6 tonight at Redlands University. Corona Centennial’s Matt Logan will coach the Riverside County senior all-star team and Redlands East Valley’s Kurt Bruich will coach the San Bernardino County team.
