Poor Are Priced Out of the Housing Market

Tens of thousands of low-income Sacramento County residents are being priced out of the housing market, according to a report from an advocacy group in the state capital.
Sacramento Self-Help Housing surveyed homes and apartments considered under federal guidelines as the most affordable and found that rents increased more than 6% last year.
The jump means that even the county’s worst housing is becoming unaffordable to low-wage workers and to many who depend on government assistance.
“We can’t find them a decent place to go check out to rent,” said John Foley, executive director of the group, which finds housing for the poor.
