Art and money

In “Nothing Private About This Passion” (Arts Notes, Jan. 19), Scott Timberg ridicules the efforts of well-known local artists, some of whom have children in private schools, to raise money for public school arts programs.
I’m sorry that Mr. Timberg has such a hang-up about successful artists and their lifestyles (“Lexus liberalism”). What does it matter which schools their kids attend, or if they have any kids? The point is that without a communitywide effort, our society will raise a generation of children largely ignorant about the arts, to the impoverishment of us all. Apparently the artists mentioned in the article recognize that, even if Mr. Timberg does not.
