Mudslides and flooding killed 16 people after a storm in the mountains near Rio de Janeiro, Brazilian rescue workers said.
A spokesman for Petropolis firefighters said 12 people were buried in mud and four drowned after a violent one-hour deluge caused flash floods and pushed river levels up by 15 feet.
Heavy rain caused mudslides that swept away flimsy slum houses built illegally on steep slopes around Petropolis, a popular weekend retreat for people from Rio.
