Union Reports Progress in Talks With Verizon
From Times Wire Reports
Verizon Communications Inc., the biggest U.S. local-telephone company, and unions representing 78,000 employees have made “significant progress” in negotiations to set new contracts and avert a strike, the Communications Workers of America said.
Verizon and union officials continued talks in Washington with a federal mediator. Workers remained on the job after the unions set aside a strike deadline of midnight Saturday.
Health-care costs, job security and worker transfers are among the main issues being discussed, Verizon spokesman Jack Hoey said.
