Simon Lends New Life to Campaign

Re “Simon Lends $4 Million to Campaign,” Sept. 19: Republican gubernatorial nominee Bill Simon calling Gov. Gray Davis “shameless” gives new meaning to the word “hypocritical.” Could Simon be any more self-serving? His campaign’s mortality was just demonstrated in the form of a $4-million “loan” by Simon to his own campaign.
If he were so confident in his chances to reach Sacramento, the $4 million would have been a donation rather than a loan. Instead, Simon fronted the money to buy TV air time in a last-ditch effort to sway some urgently needed votes. Given this latest move, if Simon does not win the November election, I’d say his welcome with the Republican Party will be as warm and fuzzy as the embrace currently enjoyed by Dan Quayle.

The fact that Simon loaned $4 million to his hopeless campaign proves that he is not a good businessman.

After the verdict against Simon, I was near depression. I could not fathom living under the Davis regime for four more years. The entire state would have to endure his higher taxes, his crushing anti-business, anti-job, anti-growth regulations and his pay-to-play scandals. So don’t think me melodramatic when I tell you that I was screaming and jumping in the air when I heard the great news about Simon.
The verdict against his family investment firm was thrown out of court (Sept. 13). The judge actually applauded Simon’s business decisions. I’m a lawyer and have never seen a decision so clear and so positive. I guess the facts really were as Simon said. Simon surprised everyone in the primary and he will do it again.
