An 81-year-old woman dived into a pond to rescue a fellow nursing home resident after a car the resident had been riding in plunged into the water.
“There wasn’t anybody else around,” said Carolyn Kelly, who heard the accident and ran to help. “I’ve done a lot of swimming in my time.”
Harlem Hutchinson, 90, was driving the car when he accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake and plunged into the pond.
Kelly swam to the passenger’s side of the car and held Nina Hutchinson’s head out of the water until firefighters arrived.
The 88-year-old woman was taken to Louisiana State University Hospital in Shreveport, but she later died.
Her husband was able to get out of the car and swim to shore.
