Enraged that their candidate lost a mayoral election, close to 1,000 supporters of the Institutional Revolutionary Party fired rifles into the air and blocked a highway in the southern state of Guerrero, police said.
The mob blocked a federal highway on the edge of the city of Teloloapan and set up barricades in front of the local headquarters of the Democratic Revolution Party, whose candidate, Modesto Brito, captured the mayoralty during elections Sunday. Police said many of the protesters were armed with machetes, rifles and automatic weapons.
