More Delano Prison Impact Facts
State officials do not claim that a prison will be the “economic salvation” of a declining community (“Delano’s Grand Illusion,” by Matthew Heller, Sept. 1). Economic impacts of a prison are normally spread over a region and the host community receives some of the benefit. We could have told Heller how many paychecks from North Kern State Prison go to people who live in Delano: 229. We also could have told him that the state Board of Equalization has a model suggesting those paychecks generate annual wages and salaries of $15,510,027, which generates retail sales of $7,599,913.
