Rebels Kill 13 Soldiers, Injure 10 in Ambush
Fighting between Colombian troops and leftist rebels killed 13 soldiers and injured 10 more, the military’s worst death toll since President Alvaro Uribe took office in August, the army said.
Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia rebels ambushed an army column near Paz de Ariporo, 170 miles northeast of the capital, Bogota. The military sent fighter jets and helicopter gunships to the area, where fighting went on for 10 hours.
Meanwhile, suspected rebels killed Arturo Hernan Baez, the mayor of Sativanorte in Boyaca province, bringing to 10 the number of mayors killed this year.
