A Ventura family’s home was severely damaged Sunday when an unattended candle sparked a fire, authorities said.
The blaze in the 300 block of Hupa Street broke out at about 1:20 p.m., after a candle caught sheets on fire in one of the bedrooms, said Rod Smith, Ventura Fire Department battalion chief. Firefighters extinguished the blaze in about 20 minutes.
No one was injured in the fire, but two pet birds and two pet rats were killed. Damage was estimated at $30,000. The family, which includes two children, is staying with friends until repairs are made.
