Court Won’t Overturn Call

MIAMI —  Miami Edison High’s postseason hopes ended Friday when a judge rejected the football team’s attempt to get its playoff loss overturned in court.

Circuit Judge Gerald Hubbart ruled that officials’ decisions are not reviewable by the court, and there is not enough evidence to show the wrong call was made.

Edison contended that a referee had no reason to stop the clock with two seconds remaining against Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer last weekend after a Dwyer player, frustrated that his team had been stopped just short of the goal line, pulled off his helmet.

That stoppage gave Dwyer time to kick the game-winning 19-yard field goal and win 11-10. Dwyer moves on to play its second-round game against Pompano Beach Ely on Friday night. Edison wanted the outcome reversed or the fourth quarter replayed.

“We feel the ruling is unfair and unfortunate, but we have to move on,” Edison Coach Corey Bell said.

Dwyer Athletic Director Kevin Sterling said the case has been a distraction for his players and coaches.

“I have had similar situations that could have gone either way,” Sterling said. “When it comes to officials’ judgment, you can’t be happy with all the calls. But never once when I was a coach did I even think about taking it to this level.”
