Schilling Is the First With 10 Victories
Curt Schilling became the first 10-game winner in the majors, retiring the first 15 batters in the Arizona Diamondbacks’ 7-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday night at San Francisco.
Schilling (10-1) gave up three hits and struck out nine in eight innings. But several miscues in the sixth led to three San Francisco runs.
Schilling hit Tsuyoshi Shinjo with a pitch and Ramon Martinez singled for the first hit. They advanced on Schilling’s wild pitch to Damon Minor and scored with two out on David Bell’s triple off the right-field wall.
Bell scored on Barry Bonds’ line-drive double off the wall in right to narrow Arizona’s advantage to 5-3.
Montreal 4, Atlanta 3--Jose Vidro hit a three-run double against reliever John Smoltz (0-2) with two out in the top of the ninth inning to lift the Expos.
Atlanta nearly rallied in its half of the ninth. Julio Franco hit a two-out run-scoring single to make it 4-3, but Scott Stewart worked out of a bases-loaded jam to earn his third save.
Pittsburgh 5, Chicago 0--Kip Wells pitched a four-hitter at Pittsburgh for the Pirates’ first complete game this season.
Wells (8-2) won his fourth in a row to become the fifth NL pitcher to win eight games. He is only two victories short of his victory total last season.
New York 4, Philadelphia 3--Mike Piazza hit a tiebreaking homer in the seventh inning and the Mets rallied from a three-run deficit at New York.
The Phillies took a 3-0 lead in the fifth, but starter Randy Wolf couldn’t hold it and Philadelphia lost for the 22nd time in 27 road games.
Cincinnati 8, Florida 2--Aaron Boone’s three-run homer, his third home run in two games, sparked a five-run first inning at Miami.
Florida’s Luis Castillo singled to extend his hitting streak to 17 games, the longest active streak in the major leagues.
Houston 10, St. Louis 5--Daryle Ward doubled twice and drove in three runs at Houston and the Astros ended St. Louis’ four-game winning streak.
Julio Lugo hit a three-run homer and Jose Vizcaino drove in two runs.
San Diego 11, Colorado 3--Rookie reliever Jason Middlebrook (1-1) pitched seven shutout innings for the Padres at San Diego.
Middlebrook gave up four hits, struck out five and walked two. He was two for two and scored a run.
