A Record Memorial Day Weekend
In what ranks as the biggest-ever Memorial Day weekend, “Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones” remained No. 1 in its second weekend in release, grossing $60 million over the four-day holiday. The film has now raked in $201.3 million domestically, reaching the $200-million mark in only 12 days--the second-fastest of any film.
“Spider-Man” grossed $35.8 million to remain in second place and has now amassed $333.6 million in North America alone. Shattering its third speed record, the film reached the $300-million mark in only 22 days, the fastest any film has reached that mark.
Meanwhile, Warner Bros.’ crime drama “Insomnia” starring Al Pacino and Robin Williams grossed $26.1 million to debut in third place; DreamWorks’ animated adventure “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron” opened in fourth place with $23.2 million; and the new Columbia Pictures’ psychological drama, “Enough,” starring Jennifer Lopez, opened in fifth with $17.2 million.
Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box-office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations Co., said ticket sales for the weekend soared to more than $200 million, easily eclipsing last year’s $186.1 million. “It’s now a foregone conclusion that we’ll have a record-breaking summer.”
