Brown’s Out, Daal’s Starting

Kevin Brown, who left Sunday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first inning because of discomfort in his surgically repaired right elbow, was put on the 15-day disabled list Monday.
Left-hander Omar Daal, who filled in well when Brown went on the disabled list earlier this season, will take Brown’s spot in the rotation for at least the next two turns. The Dodgers purchased the contract of reliever Bryan Corey from triple-A Las Vegas and the right-hander arrived at Dodger Stadium during Monday’s 5-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.
Brown, who underwent surgery for a torn flexor tendon last Sept. 27, experienced a grabbing sensation in his elbow after throwing only 20 pitches to six batters against the Diamondbacks at Phoenix. He was examined by Dr. Frank Jobe before Monday’s game and will have an MRI today.
Brown, who gave up three runs and seven hits in 61/3 innings against the Brewers last Tuesday, said he was feeling fine the day before his start on Sunday against the Diamondbacks.
“That’s just it,” Brown said, “From feeling so good one day to feeling so bad the next. We’re just trying to figure out exactly what’s wrong and then trying to put the pieces together and maybe figure out what happened.”
This is Brown’s sixth trip to the disabled list since signing a $105-million free-agent contract with the Dodgers on Dec 12, 1998. He was on the disabled list this season after tearing scar tissue in his right elbow on April 13 while pitching against the San Diego Padres.
Manager Jim Tracy said Monday’s moves were precipitated by the uncertainty of Brown’s condition and the fact that the Dodgers used five relievers who combined to throw 194 pitches in the 10-9 loss to Arizona.
“We can’t wait around for a number of days to find out [the extent of the injury] and subject the club and this bullpen when it was basically maxed out yesterday,” Tracy said.

Center fielder Dave Roberts went three for three with two walks and two stolen bases on Monday. He has five hits and two walks in his last seven plate appearances and is batting .328.

Reliever Jesse Orosco, on the disabled list because of a strained left ribcage muscle, threw off the mound again Monday and said he feels ready to be activated when he becomes eligible on Wednesday.... Terry Mulholland, on the disabled list because of a strained lower back, said he felt no pain during an extended bullpen session and will throw batting practice today with hopes of becoming activated next week.... Second baseman Mark Grudzielanek did not play Monday because of a swollen big toe. Grudzielanek was hit on the foot by a foul ball while batting Sunday.
