Another Global Investment?

Those who believe Global Finance is going to win her second in a row in today’s $65,000 Nursery Stakes at Hollywood Park hope they won’t get a short price again.

Because of a big win bet that came in just before the start of the meet’s first race on April 24, Global Finance went from 9-2 to 2-5. As a result, those who thought they were going to get at least $11 for every $2 they bet to win were instead rewarded with $2.80.

Trained by Jerry Dutton, who owns the End Sweep filly with his wife Barbara, Global Finance is the likely favorite in the five-furlong Nursery, the first local stakes of 2002 for 2-year-olds.

She and Singing Swiss, who won her debut against $40,000 maidens on April 25, are the only two members of the field with a victory around a turn. It was impressive the way Global Finance, who was purchased for $32,000 as a yearling, kicked away in the final furlong.

Although it does not quite match the 18 who ran in the Kentucky Derby a week ago, the $500,000 Lone Star Derby at Lone Star Park attracted a crowded field of 14.

Among those scheduled to go in the 11/8-mile race, which is a Grade III stakes race, are Windward Passage--excluded from the Kentucky Derby with the surprise entry of Danthebluegrassman--Forty Nine Deeds, Tracemark, Smoked Em, Cappuchino and Holdthehelm.

Trained by Todd Pletcher for Gee Three Stables, Smoked Em is the likely favorite and will be ridden by Chris McCarron.

Race of the day: Jockey Eddie Delahoussaye will be at Bay Meadows to ride Swept Overboard in the $200,000 Bay Meadows Breeders’ Cup Sprint Handicap at six furlongs. The Grade III also attracted Mellow Fellow, who has won five in a row, Sempai, who has a four-race win streak, Explicit, who has won his last two, Strike For Glory and Alyzig.

Who’s hot: The field in today’s $200,000 Nassau County Breeders’ Cup at Belmont Park. The nine entrants have won a combined 22 of 36 races.

Who’s not: Don Warren. The trainer, who is scheduled to run Stoney in today’s second at Hollywood Park, has only two victories in 74 races in 2002.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Peaceful Place, Reine Des Neiges and Nazareen in the eighth, Rapidough and Lookn East in the ninth and Youmakemethorbaby and Destiny Calling in the 10th.

Winners (through Thursday): Previous day/meet total: 4/30. Money: Previous day/meet total: $26.20/$163.60. Total money bet: $206.
