‘Ice Age’ Marches In on Top
“Ice Age,” an animated tale set in prehistoric times about a saber-toothed tiger, a sloth and a wooly mammoth who team up to return a human baby to his parents, easily froze out the competition by debuting with $46.3 million--the best March opening of any film and the third-best animated opening ever behind “Monsters, Inc.” and “Toy Story 2.”
Drawing audiences of all ages, the film was a boost for animation at 20th Century Fox, which has experienced lackluster results in the past with “Anastasia” and “Titan A.E.”
Horror fans turned out for “Resident Evil,” resulting in $17.7 million and a second-place opening. The Eddie Murphy-Robert De Niro cop comedy “Showtime” opened with $15 million for third place.
