Parties Compromise, Choose New President
From Times Wire Reports
Albania’s parliament endorsed a retired army general as president after leaders of the two main parties agreed on a compromise to avoid early elections.
Backed by 97 of 140 deputies in the legislature, Alfred Moisiu will be sworn in for a five-year term as head of state when Rexhep Mejdani’s mandate expires next month.
Moisiu will also head the armed forces, but the post is seen as largely ceremonial.
