Tests that detected nerve and mustard gas traces at a base in Uzbekistan used by U.S. troops gave false readings, and there is no contamination at the site, a U.S. spokesman said.

This month, a team found traces of what it thought were chemical weapons at the base in Karshi Khanabad. U.S. troops were moved out of several structures.

But later analysis of wood, soil and concrete samples from the site, as well as the devices used in the tests, found no traces of chemical weapons, Col. Roger King said at Bagram air base in Afghanistan. He said chemicals used to treat lumber used at the site may have caused the false results.
