Higher Property Taxes Will Help the Schools

Re “Tax Hike Helps City Keep Its Good Looks,” April 18:

Here’s an example of awkward priorities in Orange County. Irvine homeowners gave quick approval to doubling the parcel tax to keep parks maintained, streets lighted and the city’s well-manicured look intact. The approval that will cost about $70 annually per homeowner is absolutely astonishing compared to the refusal in recent years to approve measures that would have benefited public schools at a cost of $50 or less in taxes each year.

Public education benefits everyone. On an annual basis, Irvine faces cuts in vital programs. This year’s budget includes the loss of class-size reductions, music, art and sports programs. Other states support much higher taxes on homeowners’ properties to help fund public education. They have extremely strong schools to prove that higher taxes work.

Smaller class size and programs in the arts and other enrichment programs are vital to the success of public school students. I am not advocating large increases in property tax, but a small amount can go a very long way.
