EU Imposes Sanctions, Recalls Poll Watchers

The European Union ordered home its 30-member election observer team and imposed economic and diplomatic sanctions against Zimbabwe’s government.
The EU said it took the action because of Zimbabwe’s refusal to let its observers freely monitor next month’s presidential elections.
The measures include cutting off $110 million in aid, a ban on travel to the EU for President Robert Mugabe and 20 Cabinet ministers, and freezing their assets in Europe.
Zimbabwe has rejected observers from six EU nations, accusing them of favoring Mugabe’s opponents.
