1 Trial Set for Fla. Officers

MIAMI — Eleven current and former Miami police officers will be prosecuted together on charges that they planted guns or manipulated evidence in four police shootings of civilians, a judge ruled Wednesday.
Defense attorneys wanted four trials, one for each shooting. But U.S. District Judge Alan Gold ruled there are enough common threads to pursue one trial.
The officers, assigned to two special units, are accused of a string of shootings over 17 months in 1996 and 1997, according to an indictment. Three people died in the shootings.
Two other officers who admit roles in questionable shootings have pleaded guilty and are cooperating with prosecutors.
Fired officer Jesus Aguero is the only officer charged with a role in all four shootings. Two officers are charged in three shootings each.
