State Review of Secessions Studied

The Los Angeles city attorney’s office recommended Wednesday that the state controller review a financial study of the San Fernando Valley and harbor secession proposals.
Assistant City Atty. Fred Merkin made the recommendation to the City Council’s Budget Committee.
The full council will decide Friday whether to seek the controller’s review, which would cost $300,000.
The financial study, conducted by the Local Agency Formation Commission, found that the Valley and harbor area could be fiscally healthy as breakaway cities.
Councilman Nick Pacheco, the committee chairman, said he wants a controller review. “Anything that can help provide clarity and accurate numbers is something I support,” Pacheco said.
