David Balandran’s solo home run in the top of the seventh inning lifted the Long Beach Cardinals to a 2-1 victory over the Hammond ( La.) Bill Hood Broncos in the championship game of the Connie Mack World Series recently in Farmington, N.M.
Balandran, a Times’ All-Star at Lakewood High who will play for Long Beach State next season, also had a double. Long Beach forced a second game on title day with a 20-2 victory over the previously unbeaten Broncos. Balandran had three hits in the Cardinals’ 18-hit attack, including a home run.
The last team from California to win a Connie Mack title was San Pedro in 1987.
