* Maytag Corp. shares fell 5% after the No. 3 U.S. appliance maker laid off workers and said third-quarter gross profit would be hurt by slower production to clear excess inventory. The stock fell $1.56 to $29.81 on the NYSE. It has fallen 7.3% in the last year.
The job cuts occurred this month at two refrigerator plants after retailers pared June orders, a spokesman said. The workers may be rehired if production picks up, he said.
