Closing Time Is Set for Card Club
The city’s biggest card club was ordered to begin closing its tables from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m.
Superior Court Judge Read Ambler ordered the card club Bay 101 to adhere to the city’s restrictions starting Wednesday.
Ambler’s decision upheld a 1999 ordinance banning round-the-clock gambling, and gave the city more power in regulating clubs that some officials said promote crime and gambling addictions.
Mayor Ron Gonzalez said Tuesday that he plans to pursue his goal of shutting down the city’s card clubs.
“I’m very pleased and hope we can move on to the next stage to phase the card rooms out,” Gonzalez told the San Jose Mercury News. “It’s important for the safety of our community.”
