Brand’s Record Is Offensive

Elton Brand needed one offensive rebound to become the Clippers’ single-season record-holder with 372. He got it, taking a teammate’s miss and dropping it into the basket with 8:14 remaining in the first half of a 22-point victory Sunday over the Denver Nuggets.

Brand took three other offensive rebounds, part of a team-leading 10. He also scored 18 points on eight-of-11 shooting for his franchise-record-tying 54th double-double. One more game with 10 or more points and rebounds and Brand will pass Swen Nater’s 1980-81 total.

“Individual accolades are great, but I’d rather trade it for a spot in the playoffs,” Brand said. “Michael Cage [who set the franchise record with 371 offensive rebounds in 1987-88] definitely could hit the boards, so it’s good to break that record.”

Brand also is the NBA’s leading offensive rebounder over the last three seasons with 1,008.

Sunday’s sellout of 18,964 at Staples Center was the Clippers’ 22nd of the season and 13th in a row. Both are franchise records.

Update--A sore back could keep forward Darius Miles from playing tonight, according to Clipper Coach Alvin Gentry. Seattle has lost three games in a row, including an 86-83 loss to the Knicks, after winning seven of eight and cementing a spot in the playoffs. The Clippers won their first game this season against the SuperSonics by 20 points, but have lost the last two. The Clippers have lost six of their last eight games.
