Enron’s Fortune 500 Placing Is Misleading
- Share via
The fact that Enron appeared near the top of the Fortune 500 [“Wal-Mart Tops Fortune 500; Enron Rises to Fifth Place,” April 1] further confirms the problem for investors.
The Fortune 500 is seen as a indicator of corporate stability and strength, yet a company that is in bankruptcy--and is the subject of the biggest corporate fraud scandal in U.S. history--is listed as the fifth-largest company in the U.S.
If Fortune magazine falls for Enron-like accounting trickery, what hope is there for the average investor? A money jar under the mattress never looked so good.
