Womack Paces Diamondbacks

Tony Womack drove in four runs, two with a bases-loaded, two-out single to cap a fifth-inning rally, and the Arizona Diamondbacks pounded the Milwaukee Brewers, 15-9, Wednesday night at Phoenix.

Womack, who has struggled for most of the season and lost his everyday shortstop job for a time, singled twice to extend his hitting streak to a season-high 10 games. He is batting .425 (20 for 48) during that span.

Steve Finley, who entered the game with a pinch-hit, run-scoring single in Arizona’s five-run sixth inning, hit a grand slam in the seventh, his 200th career home run.

The Diamondbacks, who have 10 games remaining, began the night one-game ahead of second-place San Francisco in the NL West.

Jeromy Burnitz hit a grand slam, his fourth home run in two games at Bank One Ballpark, to put Milwaukee ahead, 5-2, in the fifth.

Philadelphia 8, Cincinnati 0-Randy Wolf pitched a one-hitter at Philadelphia, giving up Raul Gonzalez’s first major league hit in the first inning.

The Phillies stayed one game behind first-place Atlanta in the NL East.

Travis Lee hit a three-run homer and Scott Rolen slugged one.

After Gonzalez’s hit, Wolf (8-11) retired 14 in a row before walking Corky Miller to start the sixth. The left-hander retired the last 11 batters, finishing with eight strikeouts.

Atlanta 4, Florida 1-Andruw Jones hit his 33rd home run and Chipper Jones hit his 37th at Miami.

Jason Marquis (4-6) gave up five hits and one run in six innings for the Braves.

Andruw Jones’ homer leading off the sixth put the Braves ahead, 2-1, and they added two runs in the seventh against rookie reliever Benito Baez.

New York 5, Montreal 2-Glendon Rusch pitched 72/3 strong innings for the Mets at Montreal, who had a scare when catcher Mike Piazza suffered a bruised right thumb.

Piazza was struck on the thumb by a foul tip in the first inning. X-rays were negative.

Armando Benitez earned his 42nd save, topping the team record he set last season.

Rusch (8-10) gave up one run before leaving with two out in the eighth.

St. Louis 5, Houston 1-Mark McGwire broke out of a slump with two home runs and Darryl Kile gave up four hits in seven innings at Houston.

The victory was St. Louis’ second in a row over the Astros and pulled the Cardinals within 31/2 games of Houston in the NL Central.

McGwire gave Kile a boost with his 26th homer in the fifth inning for a 3-0 lead. The two-run, 418-foot drive bounced on the train tracks atop the left-field fence and out of Enron Field.

Before the homer, McGwire was one for 19 with 10 strikeouts in his previous 20 at-bats.

San Diego 3, Colorado 1-Brian Lawrence pitched six strong innings for San Diego and Ben Davis drove in two runs at Denver.

Lawrence (5-4) gave up six hits and one run, walked three and struck out four.

Shawn Chacon gave up two hits for Colorado and left in the sixth with the score tied, 1-1.

Chicago 8, Pittsburgh 4-Ricky Gutierrez had three hits and drove in two runs at Pittsburgh as the Cubs ended a four-game losing streak.
