Undersea Volcano Erupts Near Iwo Jima
Japan’s Meteorological Agency said a small underwater volcanic eruption took place near the island of Iwo Jima, 800 miles south of Tokyo, where the U.S. military has been holding exercises.
“I would describe it as a small-scale volcanic activity,” said Keiji Doi, a senior scientific officer for the agency, adding that there were no reports of damage on the island.
U.S. military exercises that had begun in the area continued.
