A Santa Paula High School teacher known for inspiring a love of reading has been named Ventura County’s teacher of the year.
A committee of local educators chose Annette Halpern from among 6,000 teachers countywide.
Halpern was honored with a plaque during a surprise visit to her school Tuesday by the superintendent and others from his office.
An English teacher at the school for six years, she is known for helping Spanish-speaking students learn English while encouraging them to read novels and schoolbooks in their own language.
Halpern, 44, started her career as a teacher in 1979 with the Los Angeles Unified School District. She will now compete for teacher of the year on the state level.
